Despite it being hard work it is important that we get a sense of a job well done. At Stormfell we like to think we have done our best to preserve our natural native hardwoods.
Its amazing what can be done with the right tools and a little knowhow
The first step is to free the log and any large branches that can be made into timber
We look at the end grain and the visible shakes and cracks to determine the best angle to cut on so getting the maximum out of the log. Only then do we set up the ladder to get our first cut
We then cut the log the timber is carefully stacked with spacers between the slabs to allow air to circulate and we seal up the end grain to prevent rapid seasoning and reduce the amount of natural cracking.
Every plank is given a unique identification number and the character and dimensions of the timer is recorded and photographed for our inventory
